About the Cover of [[EF Issue 2015.4]] illustrated by Jason Seiler.

==Article Transcript==
Each year, for the PreCon issue, we ask
the Guest of Honor if they have a piece
they would like us to use for the cover.
Jason Seiler wanted us to use his caricature
of Steven Tyler.
As soon as I saw it, I knew there was a
story behind this piece, and I asked Jason
if he was willing to share it with us.
Luckily he was!
“Yes there is a fun story here.
“Last year, Adobe hired me to paint
Steven Tyler for an ad they were running
for the Oscars. I was really excited to do
this job. Their instructions were for me
to paint rock icon Steven Tyler, which
meant capturing his huge, freakish
mouth. The ad, celebrating 25 years of
Photoshop, was going to be playing the
famous Aerosmith song "Dream On."
“Well, Adobe loved my painting and
felt, as did I, that it wasn't an insulting
caricature but rather truly captured the
feeling and character of Steven Tyler.
Unfortunately, Steven saw it and said no. In fact, he said if you use this image, I won't allow you to use my song for the ad that Adobe had already spent tons of money on. So, I received a nice letter saying we loved the painting and we'll still pay you for it, but we can't use it or we will get into some trouble. I was depressed, to say the least, but what could I do about it?
“I asked if I could at least share my work online with friends and fans, and they said yes.
“I first shared it on Instagram before sharing it anywhere else. Within a few minutes of me sharing it, I received a few phone calls from Adobe people asking if I could please take it down.
“Evidently, Steven saw it and was angry and threatened Adobe again, saying if I didn't take it down, he wouldn't let them use the song.
“So, I took it down. They ended up hiring an Adobe Illustrator artist who basically traced a picture of Steven that he himself approved. It was OK but a bit cheesy.
“I won't lie, it was hard to watch that ad during the Oscars.....Made me sick to my stomach. Was it pride messing with me, or disgust, or both. Frustrating, to say the least.
My friend A.J. who is head art director at Adobe loved the painting and bought a giclee print of it, and to this day it hangs in his office.
“Weird experience, but I'm sure there will be more and probably worse...At least I was paid and had fun drawing and painting this piece, and, personally, I like this piece and don't feel that it was offensive at all."

'''Q:''' You have worked in Mad Magazine, Cracked, Marvel in your early days. What cartoons were you drawing in those years and what made you eventually stop your collaboration with these magazines?

'''A:''' I went to New York in the early seventies hoping to get a job working for Mad Magazine. My heroes all worked there, Mort Drucker, Jack Davis, George Woodbridge, and the wacky Don Martin. They weren't looking for anybody to hire at the time but they were impressed enough that their art director John Putnam sent me down the street to see Marvel Comics. They were launching a satire magazine called Parody and I was hired to illustrate movie and TV parodies ala Mort Drucker. I did this for 5 years and quit. Why? Because I didn't want to be a Mort Drucker clone. Later, Cracked magazine called and made me a nice offer and I broke down and worked for them until they were bought out and they lowered their art rates.

'''Q:''' As you know, a majority of members of EF magazine do live caricature for a living. According to you, what is the most difficult side of this type of work? Did you draw live models in gigs?

'''A:''' I was in high school when I got my first gig doing live caricatures for an advertising agency at a grand opening. I was very nervous. Even the mayor was there. I got $100 plus expenses! I thought I'd hit the jackpot! I've done many since then and I usually enjoy the people but it's hard work. It also bothers me that after people pay a small amount for a caricature that they then see all cartoon/caricature work as cheap and quick.

'''Q:''' When did you start publishing cartoons in major editorial Canadian newspapers?

'''A:''' My first editorial cartoon was published in the Edmonton Journal and was about jaywalking. At the time, I was doing advertising cartoons for commercial publications in Edmonton in a magazine called The Roughneck. It seemed to me that drawing only one cartoon a day that you could spend a lot of time on was a wonderful concept. I knew nothing about politics. Yardley Jones had left the Edmonton Journal to go and work for the Toronto Telegram so there was an opening. Edd Uluschak who had also worked for the Roughneck got the job. I had to wait until Sid Barron had left the Calgary Albertan to go to Victoria before I got another chance. This time I got the job and I worked there for 10 years before the Albertan was bought out by the new Calgary Sun. I worked for the Calgary Sun until 1983 when the Calgary Herald publisher lured me away to work at the Calgary Herald.

'''Q:''' In 1988, you won the National Newspaper Award for Cartooning. In 1992, you served as President of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists. The National Archives of Canada’s Canadian Museum have over 1,000 caricatures by you. Do I forget something about your career?

'''A:''' During my 26 years at the Herald I won numerous awards including the National Newspaper Award in 1988. I also had 2 books of my editorial cartoons published during that time: A Brush with Irrelevance and With Weapons Drawn. Also in 1988 I launched a daily syndicated comic strip called Chubb and Chauncey which ran in newspapers around the world for 14 years.
In 2010 with tough times for newspapers everywhere the Calgary Herald bought out my contract and let me go. This was a shock to me but worse was telling me that the position of staff editorial cartoon itself was being killed. I always thought that I'd be able to pass the torch to some excited young cartoonist and offer a little wisdom but this was not to be.
I still draw cartoons and do freelance work from my home in Invermere British Colombia and my work is syndicated internationally by Artizans.

'''Q:''' Thank’s a lot, Mr. Rodewalt, for this interview.

Robert Lafontaine is one of the organizers of 1001 Visages de la caricature in Québec. The next edition will be held October 10-12 and the guest of honor will be Aislin, who has been the caricaturist for the “Montreal Gazette” for the past 40 years. Aislin is, without a doubt, one of the most influential (and long-lasting) editorial cartoonists in Canada. http://1001visages.com/programmation-2015/invite-dhonneur/
Some weeks ago, Frankfurt was the
place to be for European caricature
artists. 25 artists from 7 European
countries met between skyscrapers to
elect the best of the best of the best in
seven different categories. The Frankfurt
Minicon was organized by Marcel
Bender, his wife Irina and the amazing
new talent Thomas “Tommes” Jahn.
Thomas also presented all competitions
and gave great presentations about
the fantastic drawing software Manga
Studio as well as “A Caricaturist’s Guide
to Yoga.” Backache during and after a
gig is now history!
Guest speaker Bernd Schoenebaum,
the manager of Sebastian Krüger, explained
how to promote your artwork
and artistic service in a very professional
way. Bernd stayed a whole day
and evening, so all participants had the
chance to get advice from him.
Guido Moeller from Wacom Europe
was the second speaker of this Minicon.
He gave a helpful presentation about
also about new released products of
Jason Seiler is a busy man. When he isn't working on commissions for such things as the Time Magazine Man of the Year cover or big name corporations, he can be found offering personalized critiques to students in his online classes at Schoolism.com. The last time many ISCA members have seen him was when the convention was last held in Sandusky at the Kalahari in 2009. We are delighted to have him return as our guest of honor for this year's convention in Sandusky, Ohio. Jason was able to take a few minutes out of his busy schedule and answer a few questions via email from our president Nolan Harris. -editor

'''Q:''' How does it feel to come back to the ISCA convention? After all, it was only a few years ago when you were a competing attendee and now you're the focal point of the event!

'''A:''' I'm very excited about it. It definitely has been way too long since the last time which was in 2009 and it's a bit strange since that year the convention was held in Sandusky, so in a way I imagine it will feel like I never left. The convention always fell on a date that I wasn't able to make work for one reason or another so I am really looking forward to hanging out with everyone and having fun drawing and painting! It's weird though, every year I've been to the convention, I have been a speaker, so maybe next year I'll come and just hang out without flapping my mouth hole at everyone? In all seriousness, I am honored and deeply flattered to have been asked to come this year. In 2008 I did a small talk but was mostly competing and what made that year so special for me, besides winning a few awards, was that Ismael Roldan was the guest and awarded me the guest of honor award which meant more to me than the Nosey. He was a close friend and talented artist, who left us too soon.

'''Q:''' What have you experienced at past conventions that helped push you to become the artist you are today?

'''A:''' I thought about how to answer this one for a while now and I'm not sure if this is the answer anyone was looking for, but artistically I can't think of anything at the convention that has made me the artist I am today, except for one thing, which would be the huge amount of support and encouragement that I felt from my fellow caricature friends. That support helped push me to become a better artist because after winning the Gold Nosey in 2008, I felt that I had more to prove and I didn't want to let any of you down. I'm sure a lot of ISCA artists feel the same way.

'''Q:''' Let's take a step back and talk about how you got your start as an artist. How old were you when you realized this was your passion and who influenced you early on?

'''A:''' Well, as many of you know, my Dad, Larry Seiler, is an artist. My Dad at that time was mostly a wildlife artist and was in his studio all the time, painting or woodcarving. So, basically I was around art all the time. He showed me a few things when I was a kid, but mostly I blew him off and did my own thing. I was more interested in drawing comics or whatever I wanted, but how I wanted to. My Dad won Wildlife Artist of the Year in 1985 and later won a Wisconsin Trout Stamp. I think I felt like I had something to prove to other people, classmates and so on. I felt I had to be a good artist, had to make good on the Seiler name. That pressure that I put on myself helped me to focus and work hard early on. As far back as I can remember, I have been an artist. I was a very serious kid. I had tons of sketchbooks and when one was filled I'd start another. I had a sketchbook just for shark drawings, one for Spider-man, one for Batman, and one for The Ninja Turtles. I was a bit nuts. I didn't really want to hang out with friends all that much. My Dad would make me play outside with my brother and friends but within 30 minutes or so I was back in my room at my drawing table. I was always very interested in drawing people and when I was around 10 I started drawing caricatures. At that time I didn't know what I was doing was called caricature, it was how I saw people and it was fun. I actually thought it was something I came up with, then one day, my Dad bought a book for me called Caricature by Lenn Redman. I learned real quick that I didn't come up with this art form, and that I had a lot to work on. Around that time my parents took me to The Mall of America in Minneapolis. There were live caricaturists working at booths, I believe they were run by Tom Richmond? Anyways, I would sit and watch the artists for hours while my family shopped. 21
I was always into MAD Magazine so I guess my early influences would have to be Jack Davis and Mort Drucker. In my late teens, I was pretty much only drawing caricatures and my influences then were artists like Steve Brodner, Al Hirschfeld, and Philip Burke. Philip Burke's work sparked my dream of working for Rolling Stone. When I was 19 I moved to Chicago from Northern Wisconsin and before I left my Dad bought another book for me, Stars by Sebastian Krűger. To be honest that book pissed me off because again I thought I was doing something original. I hadn't really seen caricature work before that had strong exaggeration while rendered in a realistic way, which is what I was trying to do. So when I saw Krűger's book and saw that he was doing that and had been for years before me, I was both annoyed and inspired. For a while, Krűger was my main influence, I learned a lot about exaggeration from his work. My professional career started in my early 20s and my influences then were, of course, Krűger, Tom Richmond, Hermann Mejia, Fred Harper, Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker, Roberto Parada, C.F. Payne, Norman Mingo, Ismael Roldan, Tom Fluharty, Jan Op De Beeck, Drew Friedman, Philip Burke, Daniel Adel, James Bennet and Steve Brodner. Once I developed my own voice and style, my influences changed quite a bit, because I didn't want my caricature work to feel like the work of my early caricature influences. Caricature art is still something I enjoy but it's no longer an inspiration for my caricature work. My influences became great painters like Richard Schmid, Jeremy Lipking, Jeremy Geddes, John Singer Sargent, Zorn, and Jenny Saville, to name a few.

'''Q:''' You have become an advocate for artistic growth in the art community over the past few years with your Schoolism course. When did you decide to start spreading your knowledge? What led you towards that path?

'''A:''' I've been teaching for nearly 11 years now at Schoolism, which is a crazy thought, because I never wanted to teach and never thought I would or that I could. One day Bobby Chiu called me and shared a little bit about himself and what his vision was for the school. I hadn't heard of Bobby told me that he and Stephen Silver came up with the idea for the school, and that Stephen would be teaching a class as well. He told me that he had been following my blog "It's Funny Because It's True," and that he thought I was one of the better caricaturists that he's seen. Then he asked me if I would want to teach caricature for his new online school, Schoolism. At first I said no. I wasn't sure I could do it and didn't know how to teach caricature— I mean how do you teach someone to see what you see? Stephen Silver was a friend of mine and I trusted him. So, I called Stephen and we talked for a bit and basically, he convinced me to do it, said I would be great at it. So I called Bobby and told him I'm in, and the rest is history. Now I really like it. I've taught at least 1000 students one on one for Schoolism and have had the privilege of teaching artists who have gone on to work as professionals. Torren Thomas was one of my first students and one of the hardest workers, so it's exciting that Torren is a speaker at the convention this year. I'm so proud of his work and excited for his future artistically, and honored that I got to play a small part. One of the good things about teaching is the giving back. I care about my students and want to see them succeed. My teaching style is a bit hardcore. I believe in saying it how it is and pushing them hard when they need it. I'm currently working on a new class for Schoolism on drawing and painting portraits which I'm excited about. That class should be available before Christmas.

'''Q:''' How has becoming an art instructor changed your artistic approach?

'''A:''' I'm not sure it has. I know from teaching and critiquing for as long as I have now that it has given me a reason to have to continue to prove myself as I want to make sure to be an example and leader to my students and peers. I always try to push and challenge myself. I want to be so much better than I am now and hope from year to year that my work will continue to improve.

'''Q:''' It becomes increasingly hard for artists to juggle family life and work in the freelance world. Being an illustrator, a father, a husband and an art instructor, I imagine time management has become a very important tool for you to utilize from day to day. What time management tips do you have for our members that are looking to become freelance illustrators?

'''A:''' That's a good question, and probably one of the hardest things about being a freelance illustrator. I have my daughters 45% of the time so on the days that I don't have them it's obviously a lot easier, but lonelier too. For me the trick is knowing myself and knowing how much time I need for a particular deadline. I know how much time it will take and so I let my kids know when they need to let me work. I try to not work nights or weekends so I can spend time with my family. My studio is in my home so when I have my kids I'm here when they need me. They're used to me being home but locked in my studio until dinner time, then I'm theirs. It can be a hard thing to balance, but overall it works.

'''Q:''' How long do you spend on your assignments? Does the time vary from project to project?

'''A:''' Yes, it depends on the job that I am working on. The Weekly Standard and Rolling Stone, for example, usually only give me two days so I have to work fast and sometimes simplify my style, or come up with a new way of painting. Like keeping things more painterly, for example. If a publication gives me a week, I'll spend the entire week on it so I can get it just the way I want it. If I have other commissions I will most likely have to give myself only a couple days on it even though they gave me a week. It all depends on the job, the size, the details, and how much they're paying.

'''Q:''' As a painter, how have your methods changed over the years?

'''A:''' Well, when I was first teaching myself how to paint, I did things in a much harder way, so I guess I would have to say that I have become more experienced which helps me to paint faster and more accurately, but I also know that there is still so much more to learn. The great thing about painting is that there are so many different ways to paint, so many techniques, ways to start and finish. I've grown I think, from wanting to paint super hyper-realistic to letting go a bit and becoming more painterly, focusing more on my brush work and that sort of thing.

'''Q:''' How long ago did you get your start in illustration? What has changed about the industry since you got your start?

'''A:''' I've been working as an illustrator since around 2001 or 2002. Things were much slower for me then and at the start, I was working for small magazines that didn't really pay well. Once I started getting the attention of larger publications, things were pretty good. It was exciting to finally get paid decent checks for the same amount of work that I was doing previously for pretty much free. Things started changing a bit around 2008. Magazines started paying a little less and in the last few years caricature in publication has been happening less and less. Lately I've mostly been doing portrait work for magazines. It's good for paying my bills but not as fun. It's an unpredictable way to make a living. Some months are great, and others really slow. The hardest part for me is trying to get paid. Magazines want the artwork yesterday and then they sometimes take four to six weeks or more to pay.

'''Q:''' Is there a particular subject that you are fond of painting? Is there someone that you have been dying to paint in the future?

'''A:''' George Lucas, Nancy Pelosi and Donald Trump are always fun, but really it would be just as fun painting anyone if publications would let me draw how I see people rather than having to hold back so much. It's rare for a publication to let you really exaggerate. As far as caricature goes there's no one I am dying to draw. When I have my own free time, I work on my own personal fine art. I'm really wanting to do larger oil paintings of people, some caricature but mostly just real people that I want to pose in certain ways and lay on the paint nice and thick!

'''Q:''' What do you hope to pass on to the artists attending this year's ISCA convention in Sandusky?

'''A:''' Besides an STD? I guess would hope to inspire and energize! I'm looking forward to hanging with everyone and seeing what everyone does.

'''Q:''' In closing, which artists—living or dead— do you admire the most, or have influenced you the most?

'''A:''' I sort of covered this earlier, but one of my favorite living painters is Jenny Saville, her brush work and use of color is really exciting and inspirational to me. I also love the work and palette of Zorn.
'''Q:''' Torren, a lot of our members are excited to see you speak about your work, and many of them may not have heard of you as a younger artist in our field. Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

'''A:''' Well my name is Torren Thomas. I'm just a regular guy born and raised in the Midwest who likes to draw and paint. I've done art pretty much the entirety of my life and decided I was going to try and make it my career around middle school age. I eventually attended and graduated from the University of Kansas with a BA in illustration and have been working on becoming the best artist possible ever since.

'''Q:'''Caricaturists often come into the field from a wide variety of entrances. What was your introduction to the art form?

'''A:''' My entrance into caricature was kind of on accident. I had always seen the guys who drew caricatures at the theme parks and thought they were awesome, but I never really had any desire to actually become a live caricature artist. I really got into caricature because I got bored drawing traditional portraits of people. I was drawing and painting a lot of celebrities and musicians that I liked, but I kept feeling like I was wasting my time doing something you could easily get with a photograph. I still loved drawing people and the challenge of capturing a likeness, but I needed something more. I just felt like I wasn't being creative enough at the time. From there, I started looking at caricature artists on Google and stumbled upon the work of this guy who goes by the name Jason Seiler. I spent about three days just looking at his stuff thinking how I could never get that good. Then I saw a ray of hope when I found out he taught an online class. I scraped the money together and signed up. From there I learned the basics and how to truly caricature a subject, and I've been moving forward with it ever since.

'''Q:''' Your paintings are often based on very hot topics in popular culture. Game of Thrones, hip-hop artists, the series True Detective and more.All show a reflection of the times you are creating work in as well as a personal viewpoint and passion for the subject matter. How do you choose what subjects you paint?

'''A:''' Choosing what I paint is always the easiest part of the process because I just go with my gut. A lot of the things I end up painting happen to be things that are trending at the moment or big parts of pop culture, but I never really focus on that. If it's not a job and I'm doing work for myself, I don't think "I bet a lot of people will like this" or "this subject is hot right now." I just kind of paint what I'm into. When I paint Breaking Bad stuff or Game of Thrones stuff or certain musicians, it's because I have a genuine love for the show or the artist. You can tell a lot about me as a person just by looking at the subject matter that I paint. It's all really an expression of me and my interests.

'''Q:''' What are some of the formats which you have published work in professionally? I’ve seen restaurants, CD covers, games? Can you share a few of your recent projects with us?

'''A:''' I'm still young in this industry, but I have been blessed to have some work in a lot of different areas. I've done a lot of character design for mobile and online video games; I have paintings hanging in restaurants in Las Vegas; I've done designs for clothing lines for rappers like Snoop Dogg; and I have had a few pieces in magazines like Casino Journal, Lawrence Magazine, and Akron Listed. I was also able to do some DVD box art for a PBS documentary, have a piece on the front page of the New York Observer, and recently I've started doing cover art for some musicians.

'''Q:''' What has been a favorite piece you have done in 2015 and why?

'''A:''' If I had to pick, it would be a tie between my Chris Christie piece and the cover artwork I did for rapper Clarkairlines. I really like the Clarkairlines cover because of what it represents. He's not a big-time artist yet, and his album packaging is very important when it comes to how his project is going to be received by the public. It's an honor when someone asks you to take on a responsibility like that, so I put in a ton of work to make sure it's as good as it possibly can be. I'm very proud of the results. The Chris Christie piece I like because it's just ridiculous. An important person like Chris Christie dressed as a cheerleader? What's not to love about that?

'''Q:''' What do you hope to share with our members at the convention?

'''A:''' I guess I just want to share some of who I am with everybody. There are tons of talented people way better than me who could probably tell you more than I could about painting and art in general. I just want to share my personal approach to art, my experiences, and hope that maybe someone will get something useful out of it.
Things to know when going to the convention by Kira Layli Moore found on pages 14-15 of [[EF Issue 2015.4]]
__NOTOC__
==Article Transcript==

There are only two things you absolutely need to bring to the convention: yourself and a credit card. If you’ve got that covered, then there’s nothing to worry about. If you want to avoid a really really huge credit card bill from that week, then read on, dear reader.

==Rooming at the Kalahari==
You can always walk up to the front desk at the hotel, flash some plastic, an ID and wink to book whatever room is available (and hope that one is available). I should let you know, though, that using the ISCA booking code online or over the phone ahead of time will probably get you a better rate than a wink. Besides, I like to know there is a room waiting for me when I get there – but maybe that’s just personal preference.
It is important to note that there will be very little sleeping actually going on during the week. (Don’t be alarmed if there are bodies strewn about the ballroom – they’re just napping.) Rooms mostly serve as a dumping ground for your clothing, and a place to shower. If you’re sharing a room, remember to mark off your area of the room using masking tape and warn everyone what will happen if they cross the line.
On that note, if you’re looking for a roommate, put some messages out there on the ISCA members Facebook page and get in touch with your roomies ahead of time. Avoid the awkward situation where your roomie doesn’t know you were planning to share his or her room.

==Registration==
This is the easiest part. Find the registration table when you get there and ask the board members lots of questions...
...Seriously, though – if you’re pre-registered, all you have to do is pick up your goodie bag, T-shirt, and name tag with your competition number. You can pre-register by going to the ISCA website.
Oh, yeah – you can also sign up for certain competitions like the speed, likeness, and retail competitions. If you want a coveted spot for Art Fight during the ice breaker, this is where you can pay to play.

==Drawing in the Ballroom==
So now you’ve arrived, you’ve put the hotel stay on the credit card. You’ve registered and peppered the board with lots of questions. You need some art supplies. Simple. Get a cab to Walmart and purchase your favorite Rose-art pencils and markers...
...what, you don’t like Rose-art? You want to bring your own? Well, I suppose that’s what everyone else does....
OK then, there are a few things to keep in mind. Pack only paint bottles with lids, make sure there are caps on all your markers and don’t run with scissors. You can use any art supplies you want. You just have to use them in the ballroom. This is where all the fun is happening and you don’t want to miss out on all the creative juices leaking out everywhere. Besides that – it’s actually the rule. Anything that goes up on your wall has to have been made on-site.
Put art that you make up on your wall. There are usually a bunch of rolls of blue tape floating around that is safe to tape to the hotel walls. Don’t kidnap the tape.
There are wall specifications and rule stuff. I don’t know them, so I can’t write about them. Go read the “rules” article.
By the end of the week, if this is your first convention, you will be floored by the walls.

==Mingling and Participation==
There’s no space for wallflowers at the convention. We need that wall space for artwork. One aspect of the convention is to actually be walking around in the same non-virtual room. There are no “like” buttons installed on the walls, so you actually have to engage people using organically created sound waves projected from your face. Here’s your chance to talk about process and mediums and other artsy stuff.
At any given time there will be wanderers, intense workers, and people getting distracted...and maybe a few nappers. You will switch between these categories during the week. This is the way of the convention. Take special care of the “intense workers.” Only you can prevent distraction. On the other hand, getting distracted is part of the fun, so if you glue in your earbuds, be prepared for an antisocial week.
There are no participation ribbons at the convention, but what you get to bring home is what you learn during the week. There are guest artists and speakers who have lost a lot of last-minute sleep perfecting their seminars the night before. They have a lot to offer, so make like a sponge and soak up all that knowledge flowing freely from their brains and experience.
Marinate in those aforementioned creative juices and try out some new things. Your brain will be in a pressure cooker. Avoid a messy explosion. Make art and relieve the pressure.

==Attire==
Remember, the Kalahari is a waterpark. So dress accordingly. You can wear your swimsuit in the ballroom if you like, but sometimes it gets cold in there. So you might want to have a backup plan for when it gets a little nippy. I like to bring something snuggly to cozy up in to nap – I mean work – when the ballroom temperature falls at night.
The culmination of the week is the awards banquet. This is your chance to get all gussied up for the evening. All the greasy artists who have barely showered all week suddenly turn into beautiful swans. (Even though swans are actually kind of scary, and if you ever get chased by one: run.)

==See you there==
By now, you might be having anxiety dreams about the up-coming convention because you are so excited and nervous. This is normal. If you’ve been there before, you are probably addicted to the convention high, and if this is your first time – well, then – you will be changed forever.
The largest employer in Sandusky is the amusement park Cedar Point, but you will have to come early to experience it, as it closes for the season on November 1.
Even though things start to slow down for the winter in the Sandusky area, there are still things to see if you have the time.
RESORT LIVING
The Kalahari
http://www.kalahariresorts.com/ohio#
As one of the largest indoor waterparks in the country, The Kalahari has lots of ways to spend your downtime, especially for those who don't enjoy spending 24/7 in the drawing room.
But if you are itching to see what Sandusky has to offer in the off-season, here are a few things to keep you busy. Be sure to check the websites for prices, times of operation and exact locations.
DOWNTOWN SANDUSKY
7 miles/15 minutes north of the resort
Sandusky is situated halfway between Cleveland and Toledo, along the banks of Lake Erie, the fourth largest lake of the five Great Lakes. It is a short drive from the Kalahari.
Cooke-Dorn house
https://www.ohiohistory.org/visit/museum-and-site-locator/cooke-dorn-house
This historic home built in 1844 looks a little like a small castle on the outside but has original 1950s decor on the inside.
Merry-Go-Round Museum
www.merrygoroundmuseum.org
Housed in the former post office, this unique building contains lots of historical artifacts of the carousel and features a fullsize 1939 merry-go-round that everyone can ride. Rumor has it that the building is haunted. Its website has a page about the paranormal activity that has been experienced and it has even been visted by paranormal investigators.
Downtown Architectural Walking Tour of Sandusky
http://www.oldhouseguild.org/WalkingTourMedRes.pdf
Fans of 18th century architecture can check out buildings on this map provided at the website for The Old House Guild of Sandusky. Several of the buildings are on the National Register of Historical Places. Maritime Museum of Sandusky
www.sanduskymaritime.org
Boats, boats, boats! The Maritime Museum of Sandusky contains exhibits on, well, boats. And also on shipwrecks, the boats of Sandusky’s Underground Railroad, commercial fishing and shipping, ice harvesting, and much more!
BONUS: According to a recent article on the Fodor's website, Sandusky has some great places to eat. Here are some it recommends:
Zinc Brassiere
If you are like most Americans, you can’t get enough of this iconic movie classic that runs almost continuously on TV from Thanksgiving time until Christmas hits. But if you are like me, you cringe every time it is on and pray that no one will try to make you watch it. Again. You can tour the house that parts of the movie were filmed at and even buy one of those sexy leg lamps if you so choose. The house-turned-museum features various props and other memorabilia. But even this Story-hater wouldn’t mind visiting this piece of Americana. As long as they don’t have an interactive flagpole exhibit. You should go. Or at least check out the website. I triple-dog dare you.
West Side Market
I have drawn caricatures for 15 years and have been an NCN/ISCA member since 2006. I shave with a straight razor, ride a motorcycle and occasionaly take 11 items through the 10 item express lane.
After attending many conventions, I’ve seen the vast amount of work the board does to make the organization run smoothly. I feel I can help the organization continue in the direction it is moving.
I will also relentlessly lobby for John K. as a guest speaker.
All the people running would make great board members. So regardless of whom you vote for the board, ISCA will be in good hands.
Hello, ISCA! Let me first say that I'm honored to have been nominated. I love the work that the current board is doing, and it would be my goal to build upon their progress in order to make the organization accessible and enjoyable for as many people as possible. I've been a member since 2010, and this year I will be attending my sixth consecutive convention. From 2009-2014 I drew caricatures for Kaman's Art Shoppes at Cedar Point, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Busch Gardens Tampa. In 2013, I was caricature supervisor at Cedar Point (and ISCA's Art Fight Champion). These days you can find me on the festival circuit with In Your Face Creative Studios or working on my documentary, American Caricature.
Hey, everyone! Just a bit about me...
I've been drawing caricatures professionally for 14 years, first at theme parks while in high school and college (for business management and marketing) and then at a number of fairs. Currently, I run my own art concession company, "The California Boys," which got its start with drawing caricatures on the streets of NYC!
In New York City , I had the awesome opportunity to be on the board of a non-profit organization called "The Street Vendor Project." We helped organize and represent hundreds of street vendors across the city, financially, legally, and helped in any way we could. We successfully ran the organization while also introducing two bills into city council, which I am proud to say are now NYC law!
It would be my absolute pleasure to bring these experiences to a point as an ISCA board member. Most directly, I'd like to bring my caricature experiences and personal education to help expand ISCA's presence outside of just the convention. Not only to the caricature community, through providing more services to artists on a yearly basis, but also taking a more active role representing caricatures in the public eye. Secondly, but just as importantly, to help manage with the board on larger objectives, plans, and ideas that work toward creating a better ISCA experience for old, current, and new members alike.
Hopefully, we can work together to make ISCA even better than it already is! Thanks for your consideration!
Hey, ISCA! 2015 has been a great year for the organization, and I’ve enjoyed learning the ropes of the board and what needs to be done behind the scenes to keep ISCA running strong. A lot of what I’ve done this year has been behind the scenes (like getting the website back up and running this year when it was being attacked by spammers) along with some things we have in the works that we’re not quite ready to announce just yet. Most likely what you’ve seen from me has been running the ISCA Facebook contest, which we’ve turned into a bi-monthly contest. This has allowed for more particpation and doubled the number of chances you’ve had to win and get your entry for the big competition for a FREE One Year Membership!
Moving forward, we have some more big stuff planned to help continue to make ISCA great, and I would be honored if you chose me to continue serving on the Board of Directors for ISCA. See you all at the Kalahari!
When I got into caricatures, I had no idea that it would become my career and my passion, and the ISCA organization was an integral part in that. Through this organization, I have been fortunate enough to meet and work alongside artists that I admire and learn from their processes and artwork and all the while pushing myself to be even more awesome. I have been connected to people from around the world and have made lifelong friends and colleagues thanks to the convention. It has easily become my favorite part of the year, and all of you who come make each year an unforgettable and amazing experience.
All of that is to say, I am so honored to accept a nomination to be on the board for ISCA. I have seen it change in my time attending and I would love the opportunity to be an integral part of making that experience amazing for everyone. For example, I would like to help make voting an easier and more understandable process. Also, the interaction aspect of the convention has always been my favorite part and I would like to help facilitate more of those types of scenarios within the competition hall to help those late nights, and days, get just a little more silly, or productive, or both!
This year, I’m looking forward to giving back to the ISCA convention by running/helping with some seminars that I know you will love. If you make me part of the board, I will not only bring my own thoughts and endless amounts of enthusiasm, but I will be all ears to your input as well. I love you all!
Serving as Vice President and being on the board for the past 2 years has been a truly amazing experience. When I set out to join, I had a lot of things I wanted to bring to ISCA, and we have done a lot in just a few short years.
But even still, the major things on my list have remained as follows: Bring prestige and respect to the organization and provide an amazing product and value to every single member.
While on the board, I have been involved with the rebranding of the organization and our magazine, the growth of our social media presence, including the Facebook group, member’s challenge, Iscast, Instagram and YouTube, and helping Debbo with our Exaggerated Features Magazine. We also brought on our amazing new business manager CeCe to help us manage the organization. We have been working on putting our touches on every single aspect of the convention, redesigning the awards as well as enhancing the ceremony and presentation. I also have several behind-the-scenes projects involving creating programs, databases, and templates for next-generation board members to use and learn from as well as bringing in sponsors and donations to ISCA.
It would be my pleasure to serve you again and help create one of the strongest boards so that we can provide the best product we can to all of our members we love so much! In short, my work here is not done yet, and I’m excited for the things to come in 2016!

Now is the time to VOTE!! Please see attached ballot . Be sure to choose four (4) members that you would like to be on the Board of Directors by placing an “X” in the box before their name. Be sure to sign and print your name at the bottom of the ballot. Affix the correct amount of postage and mail to CeCe Holt, Manager, ISCA, 5110 NE 45th Street, Kansas City, MO 64117. Good luck to all of the nominees!
==Bob East==

==Tom Faraci==

==Cory Lally==

==Chris Moore==

==Ali Thome==

==Matt Zitman==
==Article Transcript==
Hello ISCA members!
Can you believe that it's already been one year since the last convention in Reno, NV? I know that I can't! A lot has happened since last November—good and bad. In January, our community was put through the ringer after the attack on Charlie Hebdo in France. The senseless deaths of 11 employees of the satirical magazine tested the resolve of artists all over the world and brought us together like never before. Why am I waiting until now to talk about this horrific event? As I reflect on this past year, one word keeps coming into my head every time I think about ISCA—COMMUNITY. Earlier this year, artists came together to fight for their right to express their ideas without fear of retaliation from extremist cowards. Artists from different backgrounds proved that there will always be strength in numbers. This is why ISCA is important! We prove every year that hundreds of artists can come together from all around the world and have fun expressing themselves! We prove that acts of hate and violence will never stop artists from expressing themselves through comedic art! ISCA is a community that proves unequivocally that free expression will never die! This is the power we have as an organization. Let's never forget that.
This past year as president has been unlike any year I've experienced in my life. I joke that even though I'm only serving one term as president, it feels like it has been three years due to all of the work we've accomplished. This year, we battled terrorist hackers (Ask me sometime. I'd be happy to tell the tale over a beer), worked out our website kinks, hired a new manager, introduced a new logo, a new magazine format, a podcast, added more social media outlets, and based on the high volume of board nominees, it looks like we made it cool to be a board member again. Not bad for one year! This is why I am very content to step down at the end of my term. I'd like to thank Matt Zitman, Jon Casey, Chris Moore, Debbie Burmeister and CeCe Holt for being such a great team. I know for a fact that ISCA will be in very capable hands moving forward!
Let's talk about the convention! You are holding in your hands the Pre-Con issue of Exaggerated Features. Make sure you read this issue from front to back for all of the convention information you can shake a stick at! Featuring illustrators Jason Seiler, C.F. Payne and Torren Thomas, this year's convention is going to be very special. We have tons of surprises in store that we cannot wait to share with all of you! Make sure you book your room through the Kalahari and bring those bathing suits. I hope to see each of you in the wave pool!
In closing, it's been an honor to leave my mark with ISCA. I appreciate all of the support over the past two years and promise that this is not the end of Nolan Harris and ISCA. I will always be an ambassador for the organization and promise that I will do everything in my power to keep this organization and our COMMUNITY strong for years to come!

Cheers,<br/>
==Jason Seiler==
Jason will talk about how he
got started, how NCN/ISCA
played a part in all of that, as
well as touch base on his book
and his personal philosophy
on caricaturing for magazines,
exaggeration and so on.

==CF Payne==
career in Illustration.

==Process & Pop Culture: Digital Painting with Torren Thomas==
Torren will share his drawings and paintings
of various celebrities and pop culture icons as
well as show his technical process for completing
digital caricatures, starting from finding
Being an artist and
fact they complement
one another in many
ways. Join Robert
Bauer for an hour discussion about how to
be a professional-level artist. You will learn
useful business and art hacks that will save
you time, money and energy. You will also
learn how not to make many of the same
mistakes that Robert learned the hard way
during his art career spanning over 30 years
as a professional artist.

one another in many
ways. Join Robert
be a professional-level artist. You will learn
mistakes that Robert learned the hard way
during his art career spanning over 30 years
as a professional artist.
