The largest employer in Sandusky is the amusement park Cedar Point, but you will have to come early to experience it, as it closes for the season on November 1.
Even though things start to slow down for the winter in the Sandusky area, there are still things to see if you have the time.
RESORT LIVING
The Kalahari

As one of the largest indoor waterparks in the country, The Kalahari has lots of ways to spend your downtime, especially for those who don't enjoy spending 24/7 in the drawing room.
But if you are itching to see what Sandusky has to offer in the off-season, here are a few things to keep you busy. Be sure to check the websites for prices, times of operation and exact locations.
DOWNTOWN SANDUSKY
7 miles/15 minutes north of the resort
Sandusky is situated halfway between Cleveland and Toledo, along the banks of Lake Erie, the fourth largest lake of the five Great Lakes. It is a short drive from the Kalahari.
Cooke-Dorn house

This historic home built in 1844 looks a little like a small castle on the outside but has original 1950s decor on the inside.
Merry-Go-Round Museum

Housed in the former post office, this unique building contains lots of historical artifacts of the carousel and features a fullsize 1939 merry-go-round that everyone can ride. Rumor has it that the building is haunted. Its website has a page about the paranormal activity that has been experienced and it has even been visted by paranormal investigators.

Boats, boats, boats! The Maritime Museum of Sandusky contains exhibits on, well, boats. And also on shipwrecks, the boats of Sandusky’s Underground Railroad, commercial fishing and shipping, ice harvesting, and much more!

Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum

Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and many other devices that make our lives fuller and simpler, was born in Milan, Ohio, in 1847. The Edison Birthplace Museum features a collection of rare Edisonia, including examples of many of Edison’s early inventions, documents, and family mementos.

This seven-building campus is very close to the Edison Museum and features such things as historical art galleries, a vintage doll collection and a fully restored Victorian house. Definitely a must-see for history buffs.
CLEVELAND

Many of our members are flying in and out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport If you have time for a side trip, here are a few suggestions.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

This venue has stocked some very interesting Rock and Roll memorabilia, from Lady Gaga’s notorious meat dress to exhibits featuring the Beatles and Elvis. The experience includes four theaters, multiple interactive stations and seven floors of exhibits showcasing the history of Rock and Roll music. This is the museum’s 20th anniversary, so special events are planned throughout the year.
“A Christmas Story” House

If you are like most Americans, you can’t get enough of this iconic movie classic that runs almost continuously on TV from Thanksgiving time until Christmas hits. But if you are like me, you cringe every time it is on and pray that no one will try to make you watch it. Again. You can tour the house that parts of the movie were filmed at and even buy one of those sexy leg lamps if you so choose. The house-turned-museum features various props and other memorabilia. But even this Story-hater wouldn’t mind visiting this piece of Americana. As long as they don’t have an interactive flagpole exhibit. You should go. Or at least check out the website. I triple-dog dare you.

Need to stock up on food before coming to the resort? (Remember, all rooms have refrigerators and microwaves.) Why not visit Cleveland’s oldest public market? The structure housing the market is over 100 years old, but was last renovated in 2004. Over 100 vendors sell everything from food to flowers.
