About the Cover of [[EF Issue 2015.4]] illustrated by Jason Seiler.

==Article Transcript==
Each year, for the PreCon issue, we ask
the Guest of Honor if they have a piece
they would like us to use for the cover.
Jason Seiler wanted us to use his caricature
of Steven Tyler.
As soon as I saw it, I knew there was a
story behind this piece, and I asked Jason
if he was willing to share it with us.
Luckily he was!
“Yes there is a fun story here.
“Last year, Adobe hired me to paint
Steven Tyler for an ad they were running
for the Oscars. I was really excited to do
this job. Their instructions were for me
to paint rock icon Steven Tyler, which
meant capturing his huge, freakish
mouth. The ad, celebrating 25 years of
Photoshop, was going to be playing the
famous Aerosmith song "Dream On."
“Well, Adobe loved my painting and
felt, as did I, that it wasn't an insulting
caricature but rather truly captured the
feeling and character of Steven Tyler.
Unfortunately, Steven saw it and said no. In fact, he said if you use this image, I won't allow you to use my song for the ad that Adobe had already spent tons of money on. So, I received a nice letter saying we loved the painting and we'll still pay you for it, but we can't use it or we will get into some trouble. I was depressed, to say the least, but what could I do about it?
“I asked if I could at least share my work online with friends and fans, and they said yes.
“I first shared it on Instagram before sharing it anywhere else. Within a few minutes of me sharing it, I received a few phone calls from Adobe people asking if I could please take it down.
“Evidently, Steven saw it and was angry and threatened Adobe again, saying if I didn't take it down, he wouldn't let them use the song.
“So, I took it down. They ended up hiring an Adobe Illustrator artist who basically traced a picture of Steven that he himself approved. It was OK but a bit cheesy.
“I won't lie, it was hard to watch that ad during the Oscars.....Made me sick to my stomach. Was it pride messing with me, or disgust, or both. Frustrating, to say the least.
My friend A.J. who is head art director at Adobe loved the painting and bought a giclee print of it, and to this day it hangs in his office.
“Weird experience, but I'm sure there will be more and probably worse...At least I was paid and had fun drawing and painting this piece, and, personally, I like this piece and don't feel that it was offensive at all."
