Article Transcript

Hello ISCA members! Can you believe that it's already been one year since the last convention in Reno, NV? I know that I can't! A lot has happened since last November—good and bad. In January, our community was put through the ringer after the attack on Charlie Hebdo in France. The senseless deaths of 11 employees of the satirical magazine tested the resolve of artists all over the world and brought us together like never before. Why am I waiting until now to talk about this horrific event? As I reflect on this past year, one word keeps coming into my head every time I think about ISCA—COMMUNITY. Earlier this year, artists came together to fight for their right to express their ideas without fear of retaliation from extremist cowards. Artists from different backgrounds proved that there will always be strength in numbers. This is why ISCA is important! We prove every year that hundreds of artists can come together from all around the world and have fun expressing themselves! We prove that acts of hate and violence will never stop artists from expressing themselves through comedic art! ISCA is a community that proves unequivocally that free expression will never die! This is the power we have as an organization. Let's never forget that. This past year as president has been unlike any year I've experienced in my life. I joke that even though I'm only serving one term as president, it feels like it has been three years due to all of the work we've accomplished. This year, we battled terrorist hackers (Ask me sometime. I'd be happy to tell the tale over a beer), worked out our website kinks, hired a new manager, introduced a new logo, a new magazine format, a podcast, added more social media outlets, and based on the high volume of board nominees, it looks like we made it cool to be a board member again. Not bad for one year! This is why I am very content to step down at the end of my term. I'd like to thank Matt Zitman, Jon Casey, Chris Moore, Debbie Burmeister and CeCe Holt for being such a great team. I know for a fact that ISCA will be in very capable hands moving forward! Let's talk about the convention! You are holding in your hands the Pre-Con issue of Exaggerated Features. Make sure you read this issue from front to back for all of the convention information you can shake a stick at! Featuring illustrators Jason Seiler, C.F. Payne and Torren Thomas, this year's convention is going to be very special. We have tons of surprises in store that we cannot wait to share with all of you! Make sure you book your room through the Kalahari and bring those bathing suits. I hope to see each of you in the wave pool! In closing, it's been an honor to leave my mark with ISCA. I appreciate all of the support over the past two years and promise that this is not the end of Nolan Harris and ISCA. I will always be an ambassador for the organization and promise that I will do everything in my power to keep this organization and our COMMUNITY strong for years to come!

Cheers,
