This time I’ll share my ‘STEP by STEP’ process for my piece on the last issue’s cover.
I tried to pack the cover with A LOT of information.
Not only did I draw some ISCA Japan members but a few Osaka sightseeing spots as well!
So here are my comments on the composition, coloring and more. Hope you enjoy!
Step one:
I start off with a sketch. This time
I’m doing some members of ISCA
Japan.
When I make big pieces with so many people in it, I try to balance the composition to share focus among all the subjects and show their personality.
Step two:
Next I start working on the skin
tones. I start off light & gradually put
down more brown. Adding pink to
the cheeks makes characters more
lively & cute (KAWAII).
Step three:
Next I put in the ochre.
This color makes me think of the
golden part of traditional JSapanese
folding screens
Step four:
Now I work on the background. It’s very
important for the mood of the piece.
It’s boring to always color the sky blue, so I chose the ochre’s complementary color .
Step five:
Next I paint in the reds. With
this complicated composition,
I had to use hand picked colors
to keep a sense of unity
in the piece.
Step six:
Now I add the blue. Red & blue are
theme colors for the Osaka minicon’s
logo, making them the second set of
colors important to the piece.
Step seven:
Next I carefully paint the hair.
The darkness adds contrast and
definition to the piece.
I then add some lines for fine detail with watercolor pencils.
Step eight:
I add the final touches with Photoshop. I add some highlights
using the “airbrush tool”. Finally I use the “stamp tool” to add the
texture from a photo of an old Japanese folding screen I prepared
in advance. I’m hoping I was able to convey the “Japanese mood”
to all the readers.
